Apple has released its long-awaited iOS 18.2 update, introducing an integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri, marking a significant milestone for the tech giant’s AI development.
The new feature allows Siri to consult ChatGPT for more complex queries, significantly enhancing its capabilities.
Integration Brings AI to the Forefront
The new update, now available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, brings the power of ChatGPT into Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri.
When users ask Siri a question that is deemed better suited for ChatGPT, the assistant will request permission to access OpenAI’s service, using the GPT-4 model for responses.
Unlike previous versions of Siri, which had limited AI functionality, this new integration aims to offer more accurate and helpful answers for complicated queries.
Apple emphasised that user privacy is a priority in this update. OpenAI will not store any queries, ensuring that all interactions remain confidential.
Users do not need a paid ChatGPT subscription to use the new feature, though the option to access upgraded versions of ChatGPT through Apple’s platform is available.
Apple has also integrated ChatGPT into some of the device’s text-based menus, expanding the accessibility of the service. The update, which is part of the broader rollout of Apple Intelligence, also includes other enhancements to Siri and various iOS features.
Boosting iPhone Sales and Apple's AI Ambitions
This integration is expected to bolster the appeal of Apple’s products, particularly its upcoming iPhone 16 series. With Apple positioning AI as a central feature of its future devices, the company is optimistic that the launch of Apple Intelligence will drive both sales and device upgrades.
"Apple Intelligence is crucial to the future of iPhones," said industry analysts, noting that AI tools like ChatGPT could enhance user experience and push the company to the forefront of consumer-facing AI.
Wider Rollout for iPhone 15 and 16 Models
The new AI capabilities are available for iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 models. Other Apple devices, including iPads and Macs, will also receive the update, though the most advanced features will be limited to the newest iPhone models.
Users can activate the feature by heading to the settings menu and selecting the Apple Intelligence option, where they will be prompted to join the waitlist for access.
The integration of ChatGPT into Siri is a major win for OpenAI, placing its AI-powered chatbot in front of millions of iPhone users. Apple has yet to disclose financial terms of the deal, but the collaboration is seen as an important step in expanding ChatGPT’s reach across consumer devices.
This update also comes as Apple has begun to roll out its first suite of Apple Intelligence features, which include improved Siri functionality, new design tools, and writing aids. The company promises that future updates will bring even more advanced AI features, including app automation and the ability for Siri to take actions within apps.
The update is available for download by heading to the Settings > General > Software Update section of the iPhone. After installing the update, users will be prompted to set up Apple Intelligence on their devices. The iOS 18.2 update also includes improvements to apps like Mail, Safari, Photos, and bug fixes.
