Indian Govt Warns Microsoft Edge Users About Major Security Risk: Should You Worry?

Oct 09, 2024

The Indian government has raised a major security warning for Microsoft Edge users this week, which needs your immediate attention. The Chromium-based Microsoft browser has a security issue that has got a high severity rating from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In this week.

The security agency claims that the web browser from Microsoft has multiple security vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to bypass the security of your device and give them access to the data stored on it.

Microsoft Edge Security Issue: What We Know

According to the CERT-In bulletin dated October 7, 2024, “these vulnerabilities exist in Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) due to insufficient data validation in Mojo, Inappropriate implementation in V8 and Integer overflow in Layout. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending a specially crafted request to the targeted system.”

The note further highlights that any successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions and execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.” None of these words are comforting and Edge users need to be careful about what they open on their system.

Microsoft Edge Security Issue: Who Is Affected

If you have the Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) version prior to 129.0.2792.79, you need to update to the latest secure build right away.

Edge has become a lot more popular thanks to the Copilot AI integration this year, and increasing use of the browser makes it an easy target for the hackers. If your system is still running on the older, vulnerable Edge version, do the following to update to the latest version:

– Click on the three-dot menu on the top-right

– Hover down to Help and Feedback

– Click on About Microsoft Edge

– Update to the latest available version

– Restart the browser

The Edge browser on your system is now secure from the latest security risks.
